More worldly wisdom from the Adventures of a Gentleman [20 Sep 2005|03:02pm]
Ton, to a single man, is a thing attainable enough.

In marriage a man lowers a woman to his own rank; in an affaire du coeur he raises himself to hers.

Remember, Henry, that the acquaintance (not the friends) of second or third-rate people are always sure to be good: they are not independent enough to receive whom they like - their whole rank is in their guests: you may be also sure that the menage will, in outward appearance at least, be quite comme il faut, and for the same reason.

Pelham, Or, the Adventures of a Gentleman, by Edward Bulwer Lytton
