Dying in style.

- Along the lines of the Titanic -

How beautiful that so many are willing to end their lives away in the service of such an extravagant gesture. In this day and age, too!

Re: Dying in style.

I couldn't resist it! Just a fanciful thought I had. Hope I have not been taken the wrong way.

Wow - I wonder what happened to all of this furniture? I wonder if some people (unknowingly) have it in their homes?

The US Navy stripped the Normandie from all embellishments before it attempted to convert her to a troop ship - some of the furniture and art can be found in luxurious restaurants in the NYC area - the rest are displayed in galleries - and some are found in private homes - I would assume the residents' would know from where they came originally. Maybe somebody here has more accurate and detailed info about this that my rough speculations can offer.

Today's cruise ships are a bastion of kitsch and plastic and fully inhabited by large families with unattractive black luggage and shorts-wearing habits.

Also note the crocodile skin Hermes bag Marlene Dietrich has in her hand.

Ah, liners! A world long-lost, much to the chagrin of those of us who are airplane-phobic. One can rent a cabin on tramp steamers still, but that lacks the right touch.
